International sign language workshop on nonmanuals, corpus and signbank issues, and the inclusion of Deaf and translation issues in linguistic studies.The University of Graz, Department of Linguistics, is hosting an international workshop on nonmanuals in sign language linguistics from May 3rd to 4th, 2019. The Department of Linguistics is located at the Universitätszentrum Wall, Merangasse 70.The official languages of the conference will be Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS), International Sign (IS) and English.This workshop focusses on:
NONMANUALS in sign languages
- their description
- their functions
- their interplay/contribution with phonological, morphologic, syntactic, and discourse units
- their gestural, prosodic, linguistic interpretation/definition/interface
- their variation
- iconicity & conceptuality
- translation challenges
CORPUS and SIGNBANK issues
- creating, enhancing, linking lexicon databases and corpora
- annotation of nonmanuals in SL corpora and signbanks
- methods and tools for sign language description
- different SL corpora (IS, L2, language acquisition, multilingual,…)
- variation
- translation within corpora
DEAF ISSUES and TRANSLATION ISSUES
- Inclusion of Deaf native perspective in SL description
- Corpus translation and use of corpora for interpreter training
- Deaf and sign language rights
- Language attitude
- Publishing scientific papers in sign language
Dedication
The workshop is dedicated to Franz Dotter, our former supervisor and head of the previous FWF-project. We will always remember him as a great colleague who ambitiously intervened on behalf of Deaf rights and sign language research.
