FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT & CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Workshop on Annotation of Sign Language Corpora
Dates: 14-16 June 2010
Location: Stockholm University, Sweden
Organisers: Johanna Mesch & Onno Crasborn, Sign Linguistics Corpora Network
Web site: http://www.ru.nl/slcn/workshops/3_annotation
The third of a series of four workshops on the construction and exploitation of signed language corpora will take place in the summer of this year in Stockholm, Sweden. During three days, we will have a highly interactive event with plenty of time for discussion and exercise. The central question will be how large amounts of video data can best be annotated for various linguistic research purposes. In the mornings, lectures on experiences with particular annotation schemes and conventions will be presented by experienced researchers, with ample time for discussion. In the afternoons, there will be an opportunity for everyone to dive further into one or more annotation practices discussed in the afternoon. For this purpose, participants are urged to bring their own data on a laptop, preferably with an annotation tool that they are comfortable with. There will be concrete assignments that people can carry out, or alternatively they can discuss their past experiences in small groups.
Aside from your participation in discussions and practice sessions, we welcome short presentations on your own annotation experiences, whether related to the main topics (Phonetics, Morphosyntax, Discourse) or in any other linguistic domain. Please get in touch with Onno Crasborn (o.crasborn@let.ru.nl) if you would like to present something.
The last afternoon of the workshop will be devoted to a tutorial on the ARBIL metadata tool, a wish expressed by many participants at the previous workshop on metadata. An introduction to specific metadata formats is included in that tutorial.
Preliminary programme:
Monday June 14th: Introduction; Phonetics
Invited speakers: Trevor Johnston, Thomas Hanke
Tuesday June 15th: Morphosyntax and discourse
Invited speakers: Marie-Anne Sallandre, Trevor Johnston
Wednesday June 16th: Glossing
Invited speakers: Jens Hessmann + t.b.a.; followed by plenary discussion
Wednesday afternoon: ARBIL metadata tutorial
Invited speaker: Peter Withers (MPI), with Onno Crasborn
See the web site for further details. Suggestions for the programme are very welcome.
There will be no registration fee, but we urge you to register as soon as possible by sending an email to johanna.mesch@ling.su.se
People are urged to book accomodation as soon as possible, as it will be very hard to find hotel rooms for the week of the workshop due to a royal wedding in Stockholm. The web site offers several suggestions for accomodation.
With kind regards,
Onno Crasborn, Radboud University Nijmegen, o.crasborn@let.ru.nl
Johanna Mesch, Stockholm University, johanna.mesch@ling.su.se
