The Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the position of Research Assistant in the Study of Language and Math (SLaM) project based in the Language Creation Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Marie Coppola, Principal Investigator. This is a full-time grant-funded, end-date position starting in summer 2018, with a high likelihood of renewal contingent upon funding availability. Deaf and Hard of Hearing applicants are especially encouraged to apply.
DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES
Data collection with deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children and adults*; possibility of experimental design; development of stimuli; possibility of developing and applying coding schemes to the data; qualitative and quantitative data analysis; digitizing video data and maintaining the database; potential of training and assisting undergraduate students and other lab personnel; literature searches and reviews on related topics; assisting with IRB protocols; website maintenance; preparing manuscripts; other related research duties as requested.
*Candidates should note that data collection will involve travel and work within the US, and also may occur during evenings and/or weekends.
For Research Assistant 1/2:
Bachelor’s degree in a related major (including, but not limited to, the following fields: cognitive science,
psychology, linguistics, and human development); excellent production and comprehension of American SignLanguage; experie nce collecting data with human participants; experience coding behavioral data; ability to travel and work at various locations within the US for 1-2 week periods and the ability to perform data collection during evenings and/or weekends.
Additional minimum qualifications for consideration as a Research Assistant 2:
Candidates for the Research Assistant 2 position must have two to three years of post-Bachelor’s degree
experience or an M.A. or M.S. with zero to one year of post-degree experience. Equivalent specialized training and experience may be considered for those without the typical degree/experience combination. Candidates must have experience collecting data with signing Deaf children and/or adults and familiarity with Macintosh OS.
For a Research Assistant 1/2:
Excellent organizational and communication skills and ability to work independently; experience collecting data with children; working with gesture and/or sign language data; Microsoft Office; familiarity with capturing, digitizing and editing video materials; quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills; background in cognitive development, language acquisition, sign language structure; familiarity searching online databases of psychological and linguistic literature; Spanish language skills.
Additional preferred qualification as a Research Assistant 1: Collecting data with Deaf and Hard of Hearing participants.
